Is Your Cold Water Dehydrating You?

Do you like ice cold water or room temperature? A recent survey of American adults found that 79% of people prefer to drink cold water especially on hot days or after exercise. But does the temperature of your water affect how hydrated your body is?

Does water temperature affect your hydration?

The short answer to this question is yes. The temperature of your water does affect how well your body processes water and hydrates you. Although you are hydrating no matter what temperature your water is, there are times when it’s best to have your water cold as opposed to warm.

When should I be drinking cold water?

When you work out:

As you work out your body temperature increases which causes you to lose more energy. When you drink cold water during your workout, it can help to cool down your internal core temperature. This results in less fatigue and more energy when you workout.

When you are sweating:

Cool water is more refreshing when you are hot or sweating. This can encourage you to drink more water.

To increase alertness:

Cold water jolts the system and can be used to wake you up.

When should I be drinking warm water?

When you’re congested:

Warm water can help clear your sinuses and ease your symptoms so breathing becomes easier.

To promote digestion:

Warm water makes it easier for your stomach to dissolve foods and make them easier to digest.

To feel less thirsty:

Warm water makes you feel less thirsty and in return you may not drink as much.

What is the best temperature of water to drink?

According to a study done by the Korey Stringer Institute, the optimal temperature of water is around 50-69℉. This temperature will allow you to maintain an appropriate level of hydration and maximize your exercise performance. Room temperature water is considered 78℉ so you should be drinking cooler water rather than room temperature for the best hydration results.

HydroJug offers stainless steel, double walled, and premium polypropylene bottles to help keep your water at the temperature that YOU want. As well as insulating sleeves to keep your water cooler as well as allow you to take your hydration 'hands-free'.
