From a young age we are all taught that drinking water is important for us and that staying hydrated is an important part of our health. But why do we need to hydrate and how does hydration work?

Why do we need to hydrate?

Water is the substance that keeps our bodies functioning properly. Did you know that water isn’t a waste product of our bodies, it’s simply the tool used to remove waste? The main purpose of water in our body is to break down food (regulate metabolism) and remove waste. Water helps to dissolve these wastes and allows them to pass out of our bodies in ways such as sweat. Because our bodies rely on water to dissolve and remove our waste, it is important that we keep enough water in our system to keep the process functioning.

How does hydration work?

Your body loses water through four main ways: breath, sweat, urine, and feces as well as through things like spit and tears. In order to replenish the water lost, we can gain water by drinking and breaking down food. Our bodies consist of about 60% water, and it is constantly regulating how much water is taken in and lost. When you lose a certain amount of water, your body sends you a warning sign by making you feel thirsty. If it is a hot day, and you lose a lot of water very quickly it can trigger an emergency signal from your body which can make you feel sick or unpleasant. This is your body’s way of telling you to drink water asap. When you’ve drunk enough water, your thirst will feel quenched and your body can continue as normal!

When you exercise, your body loses salt through your sweat, and because your sweat can’t be concentrated in your body, you have to replace it! This is why energy drinks can be very helpful to athletes.

Can you get hydrated from drinking beverages other than water?

Although water is the main way to increase your hydration, there are other ways to increase your water intake. Milk is actually a great way to refuel your body. It is high in protein and other nutrients that your body needs. Although you can technically rehydrate from sodas and juices, they are full of sugar and other additives that aren’t the most healthy for you. These drinks are best in moderation. It used to be believed that coffee and tea were dehydrating, but that has been proven wrong. Although they are a minor diuretic, it is not enough to severely affect your hydration.

If you are getting tired of drinking plain water, you can add fruit or herbs to spice it up. Check out our Water Recipes blog to get some ideas!

How much water do I need to hydrate?

The amount of water needed to stay hydrated varies from person to person. Your age, weight, gender, and activity level all play a role in calculating the amount of water you need. Be sure to use our Hydration Calculator to figure out how much water you should be drinking every day.
