How To Stay Hydrated In Cold Weather
Fall can be an exciting time of year for everyone. School goes back into session, sports seasons start, and the extreme heat starts fading into that perfect “sweatshirt” weather. Cue the fantasy football leagues, haunted houses, and cozy movie days. But most importantly…cue the hydration.
Statistically, when the weather gets colder, your chance of dehydration can actually increase. This is because when the weather is cold, people feel less thirsty and less inclined to drink water. When you’re cold, the last thing you want to do is drink cold water. However, even though we sweat less in the cold air, your body still loses fluids throughout the day through bodily functions and your activity level.
There are several tricks that you can use during the cold weather months to make sure that you are staying hydrated…
- Set regular times throughout the day that are designated to drink water. It is important that you do this even if you aren’t thirsty. Try setting an alarm in your phone if you are forgetful.
- Include more fruits and vegetables in your diet. You can get more water intake through food as well! Not only is this good for your health in general, but it is an easy way to increase your hydration throughout the day.
- It can be hard to make yourself drink cold water when it’s cold outside, however try substituting some warm beverages in to keep your water intake up. Try drinking non caffeinated hot teas, herbal teas, or even hot cider.
- Drink caffeinated drinks or alcohol in moderation because they can increase dehydration.
- Always have a reusable water bottle with you!
